I introduce the west breakwater of Niigata East Port, where we can enjoy seabass fishing in spring. Seabass fishing is open in March there. In March and April we will get several but smaller seabass; the number is two to five and length is about 50cm. Almost rankers (over 80cm) are caught in June, July and September. But the number is small and many anglers often do not get any fishes in those months. So seabass fishing in the early season is suited to beginner anglers.
It takes thirty minutes to go there from central Niigata by car. Go east on the seventh highway, then go down at Toyosaka IC and go north. You will get to Shimami-chyo crossing. Turn to the right and go ahead. Then you will get to Tarodai-chyo crossing. Turn to the left and go ahead. Soon you will find the west breakwater.
The length of the west breakwater is about four Km.
There are two spots. One is Kyuto. It means the site of an old lighthouse. There is a rock in the front of Kyuto under the sea. Many rankers are fished there evry year.
Another spot is Sentan. It means the tip of the breakwater. If you want to get rankers, you should fish at Kyuto. But you often catch no fish in this season. If you want to get some fishes without fail, go to Sentan.
The depth is over twenty meters there. In early season seabass are swimming deeply. You should sink your lures deeply. Sometimes small bait fishes are in the surface of the sea. In this case seabass are also in the surface and you should fish there.
I did not go seabass fishing in spring in 2000, because I enjoyed spanish mackerel fishing at the north breakwater in that year. So I show you the results of 1999. They tasted good. My family and friends also enjoyed seabass dishes! Why don't you fish them?
